Provost  Innovation Award in Teaching and Learning with Technology

Initiative sponsored by the Associate Provost for Innovation through Technology with assistance by the Center for Teaching at Vanderbilt University. 
A faculty solicitation for redesigning six courses to support new  innovations of using technology to improve learning and assessment and to further strengthen the connection between learning and research for students was developed and many proposals were received.  Six projects were selected  for FY04 funding for completion to occur at the end of the annual year FY05.

Peggy Setie-Eilers
:  German Cultural MOOse.  Project consists of the use of virtual communities to promote language skill development and deeper understanding of German culture.
Leah H. Marcus:  Interactive Shakespeare.  Project involves collaborative effort with MIT to provide web-based indexing and arrangement of DVD multimedia clips of multiple Shakespeare theatrical productions.

Gerald S. Gotterer
:  On-Line Learning Portfolio:  Emphasis Program.  Project will implement web-based student portfolios for supporting faculty mentoring, capturing and assessing student learning and development.
A.M. Mellor and Sean P. Brophy:  Learning Enhancement in Advanced Mechanical Engineering Thermodynamics.  Project introduces modeling technologies into course to promote the development of model-based reasoning development in students.
Anita-Mahadevan-Jansen and Christopher J. Rowe:  Web-Based Classroom Student Assessment System. Project is applying web-based delivered student response system for capturing student input in support of just-in-time teaching and assessment.
Greg Walker:  Lecturing with Tablet PC's in Auditoriums.  Project consists of using new tablet PC technology to make instructor thinking skills and strategies visible to students in large-lecture course settings.
Current FY04 grant projects are expected to operate through the end of the Spring 06 semester to collect and analyze data from the six experimental redesigned course efforts.  Grant recipient meetings are underway.  Faculty award recipients are supported by the staff with redesign effort of courses and outcome evaluations.
